Invasion Comics

East Meets West

The Idea
Invasion Comics is a store right in the middle of Japantown. It is located in an otherwise nondescript building on Webster Street near Geary Boulevard, tucked between a travel agency and a tea and tobacco shop. It’s been there for as long as anyone can remember. It was originally “Webster Comics,” a neighborhood manga store that stocked the occasional English translation. Simon Tanka-Smith bought it from the previous owner fifteen years ago. It has since grown into a mecca of Japanese media with anime, manga, hentai and everything in between. The small storefront opens onto a fairly large interior that is stuffed floor to ceiling with shelves of comics, graphic novels, games, collectibles, DVDs, tshirts and anything else fans might want. And if that isn’t enough, it’s also the local gathering spot for game players, anime enthusiasts, and the like.
